Dividend Growth Investing

My name is Jake. My wife and I reached Barista F.I.R.E. in 2023 at the age of 37.
JL Collins pioneered the idea of investing into VTSAX (VTI) as the simple path to wealth. Inspired by JL Collins, I created the simple path to wealth with dividend investing to reach financial independence. I believe those seeking to live off of a dividend portfolio should adopt a similar approach as suggested by JL Collins. My take on the simple path to wealth with dividend investing is to buy SCHD/DGRO, buy as much as you can whenever you can and hold them forever.

In the tax advantaged account focus on achieving the highest total return. When you retire you can rebalance toward income and yield to provide an income without having to invade the principle In your brokerage account…? Focus on growth and pay the tax bill upon rebalance
I'm doing 40% SCHD, 40% DGRO, 20% VOO in M1 Finance! Dollar cost averaging couldn't be easier in my taxable brokerage account.
Simple path to wealth with dividend investing!!
Can we get M1 in Canada?
Just in the US for now.
M1 started charging monthly fees.
Yeah if the account balance is under $10k I believe they charge $3 a month. They now offer all M1 plus features without a fee (before it was I believe around $120 ish a year). I personally am not the biggest fan of paying the $3 a month, but if you get value out of the brokerage and grow your account to $10k, I think it could be worth it to start out with. Otherwise, may be something to look at transferring into once you have $10k invested.
How much money to your net worth came from your wife? It looks impressive but wondering if you were both doing great money or you were also getting good return from investments?
Never mind i see you added your wife’s income :)
Now change how the money is allocated. I want my set % to go into that security no matter what. If your holding tsla or nvda you'll miss the run. Because as the share price grows you won't be DCAing into the stock. They need direct investing and dynamic investing. I do love the added DRIP. Again it will off setyour allocation badly
yeah pros and cons with it for sure. Now you have a lot more control of how you invest with M1.
I’ve always enjoyed your channel especially after we got to chat a few years as ago now. This particular show was very insightful. Interestingly, I was seriously considering moving my account this morning given the recent Evolve Bank / Synapse debacle. Hearing Brian speak about how they safeguard my money was reassuring.
Hey!!! Glad to see you again! Yeah the safety/security piece has always been a big deal for me. I'm happy using M1.
Im curious if this is replicable in Canada. Given the tax situation/ high cost of living north of the border. Any thoughts are appreciated 😊
Well its all relative. You have lower costs for healthcare for example. So it all depends on your expenses. My $2M might be your $1.4M due to lower costs. It all depends on your particular situation.
@@DividendGrowthInvesting Thank you, sir :)
Hi Jake, welcome improvements. I could even get really specific on how to allocate dividends to different equities. Good update.
Yeah I'm excited to track my income directly in M1! I like the direction they are taking the platform. If you aren't looking to actively trade and just want to passively invest, I think M1 is great!
Thank you for the information.
You bet!
Great content, always nice to hear from him when M1 rolls out new features. I think M1 is popular in FIRE because the majority of that criwd is younger where the M1 interface is appealing, plus they don't necessarily know much about the complexities in a big brokerage. I still recommend M1 to new investors but I find that i have outgrown M1's capabilities. My pies just sit there because I'm too cheap to pay for a transfer!
Yeah I can understand that. It’s a pretty simple approach by automating everything. It’s not flashy or too exciting. But I mean investing should be boring if you really want to build wealth.
Great interview. Glad I'm an M1 user. Excellent platform for self directed investing.
Thank you! Yeah I agree. It’s not for trading though so it comes down to what you’re trying to do.
i dont trust anyone on youtube that dont show their faces.
That’s fair. No need to trust a stranger. Hopefully the video was helpful for you.
im single and handicaPPED so i have low income i have a paid for house with a renter and that brings in 795 a month overall im about 35k a year how do i grow it?
Check out my videos on the simple path to wealth with dividend investing. I think that video will help you.
I am amazed by your saving rate, retirement savings. How your portfolio looked like
I've only been using m1 for less than a month so I'm still learning it. However, I'm very happy with it so far. It is much easier to use compared to Merrill which is where I'm coming from. My only complaint is that i wish it had just a little bit more stock and ETF history details for researching purposes without needing to seek outside sources like seeking alpha. I'd love an all in one site.
I used to love M1 and was with them from the beginning but they just kept taking away perks and I didn't like the directions they were going in. Still a great platform for most.
Yeah they have introduced some things then pulled them back. I think if you have at least $10k with them and avoid the monthly fee, it can be a great platform to automate your investing.
@@DividendGrowthInvesting I had quite a lot with them. The credit card reward got lowered, the debit card and checking account were taken away, the dollar amount needed to be reinvested was increased, and the TurboTax integration gone was enough for me to switch to fidelity. I hope they don't continue that methodology in the future. Good platform for most new investors though. Great content as always!
M1 started charging me a $3 per month fee for the "privilege" of having an account, so I closed it out.
They opened up all the M1 plus features to everyone without a fee now. The introduced the $3 fee on accounts that are below $10k. May be something to consider transferring to M1 once you have $10k invested if you don't get value from the M1 plus features
Love these new features. Help automatic stuff that I been doing myself.
@@KietNguyen-up9vx yeah it will make it a lot easier!
Great video. M1 for the win 🤑
@@user-bm6wu9zw9m hey!!! Thanks for watching!
Would love to hear why they closed out a bunch of M1 plus card with no warning or explanation, and the complete lack of customer service competency.
No clue. I would check with m1. They are always fast to respond to my ticket requests.
@@DividendGrowthInvesting I checked with M1. They dropped the ball big time. And this is coming from a 6 year M1 user. Also a long time viewer of your channel. 😀 I tried contacting M1 multiple times over multiple days. I've loved the platform, but their handling of customer service requests has been concerning to say the least. Sent emails, called them, and used the chat feature. No explanation.
This dividend tracker feature and the ability to do drip to where tou want it is a big game chaneger
@@avinashnarine7070 ya I think so as well!
Great features for M1, I like the platform, only downside is paying $3.00/month of my daughters accounts. 👍🏼
@@norttorres yeah the $3 is not ideal for small accounts. You could consider starting with a free brokerage and then transferring to M1 once you get to $10,000. Whatever makes the most sense for you
That's why I'm switching out. It's going to be a minute before I'm over that hump.
This was a great interview. The auto rebalancing of dividend payments to match the target allocation is one of my favorite features so i di not see nyself changing that. What would be cool to see in the myPies research section to go along with the total portfolio yield would be the 5 year average dividend CAGR. And then if you could interactively change your portfolio allocation and see hiw those numbers change, then pick an allocation based on that and set it for your portfolio. Depending on your stocks switching a few holdings a few percentage points can have a meaningful impact. It would be cool to be able to visualize that.
Hey Mike! Yeah the dynamic rebalancing is actually one of my favorite features. Yeah the dividend CAGR and even a dividend safety metric would be nice to have. Yeah the interactive view you could do in the research section in a manual way. You would just update different pies. All in all I like the direction of m1. I’ve been using m1 for 5 years and I really enjoy it for what I’m trying to do. If I traded in and out of stocks it wouldn’t work for me. All depends on your goals I guess.
@@DividendGrowthInvesting it does depend on your goals. And given you shared a video about your full investments and your trading of options, you cannot say you don't trade 😁. I do the same. I find different accounts for different purposes helpful. Maybe one day I will have a big enough pile where I can live solely on the dividends, but that is not this day. Hell I still have a full time job.
@@mikesurel5040 ya I sell csp and covered calls in a different account for income. You should check out barista fire. You may like it more than full retirement.
Happy Sunday and great interview! Big things happening for you, I’m here for it. 🎉
Thanks so much!! It was great chatting with Brian.
Love M1, and have been using it for 3 years. Thanks for the updates!
Thanks for watching!!
Too bad M1 started charging small or new investors each month for an account. It reduces dividends we receive
Love all your videos, Jake! But this one along with the Steven Cress interview were great surprises! I even think the Steven Cress video was dropped on a Wednesday, making it an even bigger surprise! I'm always on my M1 mobile app, so I didn't even know I had this dividend tracking/management feature already. I hope I caught it in time for tomorrow's SCHD distribution! Cheers!
Hey Robert! Great to see you! Yeah these are very different videos than what I normally make on the channel. Brian mentioned that the new M1 dividend features are going to be just on desktop for now and rolled out to mobile later. You can log into M1 on your desktop and update the distribution for SCHD.
@@DividendGrowthInvesting Yep, already set up! I assume there's no lag, but since the payout already shows "pending", you never know. Thanks for sharing this huge new feature. I know you're already in Utah... I'll be in Austin the end of July for a software "bootcamp". Unbearable heat in Texas right now. Hope you and yours are well!
@@robertricker3575 Glad you got it set up. Dang... I wish I could have met you in Austin while you are in town. omg.. it is hot here in Utah as well.
This video was great. Love the perspective and transparency. This update is great for the platform.
Really glad to hear you enjoyed it! Yeah the new dividend features are great!
Is it easy to transfer over from fidelity?
Yeah I transferred from Robinhood and also from Vanguard a few years ago. It takes a few days, but pretty simple. Here is a link to help you understand the process: dgitofi.com/TransfertoM1
Super dope! Ive been using a seperate app to get an idea of what dividends were coming in, dates etc etc. This was definitely needed. Hopefully it will be on mobile sooner than later. Great interview.
Hey!! Yeah I was thinking about signing up to a dividend tracker but no longer need to. Yeah the mobile version will take some time he said. I like the under promise over deliver approach. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Agree....100%
M1 is the perfect platform for me. RH is trader oriented, M1 is long term investor oriented. I will always “portfolio drip” even though I initially thought I would drip individual shares. M1 makes that easy.
Hey Michael! I’m the same way!! I personally would use the dynamic rebalancing option if I was still dca ing in my portfolio
@@DividendGrowthInvestingthank you for bringing us this conversation. Now I have another financial hero.
I wish he would give is the ability to sell covered calls on our stocks
Yeah I’ve heard a lot of people talk about that. I would also like that available. They release new features every year so something to keep an eye on
@DividendGrowthInvesting I mean If i own 1k shares of a company I could sell covered calls every week to just make more revenue to buy more stocks
Current taxable brokerage is SCHD 50%, DGRO 30%, SCHG 20%. Keeping it simple with ETFs this time after all the mistakes made with Wealthfront’s robo-investing with Tax-LOSS harvesting.
The simple path to wealth with dividend investing!!
You have it backwards, SCHG should be your biggest holding. SCHG 70% DGRO/SCHD 30%
@@dividendfire855 dividends continued to grow when the appreciation of the growth stops during the last dip. And within years the dividends will cover about half of my bills after my mortgage. Without ever touching the principle to pass on to the next ones. It’s mainly just there as a reserve to buy more of the other two in case they dip for better DCA. I’m good with dividend etfs they greatly benefit my portfolio and belong at their percentages.
@@dividendfire855 Thanks bro. What about QQQM?
Stay tuned for special guest, Jim Cramer next week! HaHa 😂 Look at you doing big things Jake. This is awesome man! However the idea for this video came to be it must have been somewhat exciting when you were able to start communicating with Brian about the collaboration. Too cool! M1 really is a great platform and I’d be lying if I said that I knew about it before starting to watch your videos a few years back.
Hey Mike! haha yeah next week you can expect to see a lightning round with Cramer ;) It was really great chatting with Brian. Thank you so much for watching!!

Thanks for watching!!! Happy Sunday!
Would love to see OTC stocks on M1 someday
Yeah that would open up a lot of new choices for people. I'm personally keeping an eye on covered calls coming to M1 in the future.
If M1 offered covered calls, I’m switching from Fidelity Basket Portfolios, ha!
I really enjoyed the conversation with Brian. I know many of you who use M1 are going to enjoy the new dividend tracker and DRIP. This video was not sponsored by M1, so I had a lot more flexibility on what we talked about. I hope you enjoy the video! ▸ Try M1 Finance: dgitofi.com/TryM1
$260k salary is soooo achievable for non americans
@@alt-thinking I had that for 1/10 years or 10% of the time. Take a look at where I started. You have to remember that it’s very expensive in America. Health insurance is not free. It’s all relative.
Greetings from ATX!
Hey there!!!
A Short Attack is the same as Pump and Dump, just the other direction. So maybe we should outlaw buying a stock long.
Yeah and how much was invested???
Nice! My NW is about $150K right now but my plan is to dollar cost avg into ETFs (VFV/XEQT in Canada). Goal is to hit $3M in 20 years. If nothing changed today I could save/invest $50K per year and at 8% it gets me there but I expect my income to grow in the coming years (currently $140K annually) with a target to get to $250K in next 3-4 years. Not planning to buy property unless I do it with a partner and will make a minimum down payment only. Once I hit $3M moving it all to fixed income/dividends and live off the income. Currently 36 years old. Want to retire at 56 Years old.
Cmon man you worked boring jobs didn’t pay taxes and arguably exploited renters who can’t afford to buy. Good for you if that is how you want to realise your financial freedom but is this how you want to live your life? I suppose this is the American way to get rich…
lol what… how do you not pay taxes as a W2 employee. The government takes it out before I even get paid. Not sure what you’re thinking. Assuming the worst in people is no way to live life. Not everyone exploits renters. You may want to consider new friends. A little positivity makes life a lot nicer.
@@DividendGrowthInvesting Yes cause you moved to Austin Texas for the great weather… right. You have a masters degree which gives you a great advantage and endless oppurtunities but your solution to working a job that you felt was going to kill you was to work it more? How inspiring! Why not work a job that’s rewarding and brings fulfilment to your life? Unless working in Sales is the kind of fulfilment you seek.
@@DividendGrowthInvesting I don’t know you and I’m sure you are a great guy, I simply disagree with your logic on how to achieve financial freedom. I rather surround myself with individuals who are passionate about what they do instead pf ones who care about an arbitrary number going up on their banking application as a means of coping with a life they don’t enjoy.
I love all your videos so I must be a nerd like you lol. They’re easy to understand and very informative regardless of your age or time horizon which is what I find the most appealing. Keep up the great work!
I appreciate that!
That is a wicked income. I'm not sure I'll be able to do that. I expect to cap out at about 70k a year.
